 | | | | QUEEN ELIZABETH SCORES ANOTHER FIRST WITH SCULPTURE COMPETITION
| | | Usually commissions for major works of art go to well-known names, and rarely are aspiring students or interested amateurs invited to submit designs for a public sculpture that will be admired by thousands of people every year.
But that’s the radical intention of Cunard in seeking designs for a major sculpture to dominate the Royal Arcade, the shopping area on board the line’s new Queen Elizabeth – currently under construction in Italy and due to enter service in October 2010. This will be one of a number of ‘firsts’ for Queen Elizabeth – details of which will be announced in coming months.
Peter Shanks, President and Managing Director, Cunard, says:
“Cunard has long been known for commissioning original works of art and in the past like everyone else, we have tended to seek works from established and known artists. But for this substantial piece we decided it would be refreshing to invite aspiring artists to have a go”.
The competition is being promoted in partnership with The Daily Telegraph and is open to their readers and beyond. Full details of the terms and conditions of the competition are available at telegraph.co.uk/culture.
The competition closes in December and will be judged in January by an eminent panel including Charles Saumarez Smith, Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts.
